Amazon Cloud Player review: functional, not mind blowing, and still US-only

Amazon Android Cloud Player appIt’s hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society — which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions – is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon’s two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it’s the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android.

Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It’s not particularly feature rich, and there’s no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive — it does work outside the US, however.

Its primary purpose, as far as we’re concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it’s $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space.

The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it’s very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let’s dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look.

Sony Alpha NEX-5N on sale, NEX-7 available for pre-order

Our network of eagle-eyed tipsters have given us the heads-up that Sony’s $700 NEX-5N is ready to buy online, and curious camera fans can check out last month’s hands-on before deciding to part ways with that much cheddar. The company is also taking pre-orders for the monstrous NEX-7, which costs $1,350 — slightly more than we’d expected. This camera has a 24.3-megapixel sensor, can shoot AVCHD video and stills up to 10 fps and can probably see the turn of the universe, or something. This one will make its way to homesteads in November, giving you just enough time to learn how to record everyone’s disappointed faces — come Christmas morning — in eye watering detail.

[Thanks, Sammy]

The Amazon Tablet: Lying, Waiting, Learning?

The HP TouchPad’s demise and semi-resurrection seems to have lent new strength to rumors that Amazon is working on its own tablet. Some rumors hold that Amazon will offer one tablet; others contend it will offer two. The speculation is that Amazon will sell the hardware at a loss and make up for that through selling content, which it has in abundance.

White Galaxy S II lands at Vodafone, ignores post-Labor Day etiquette

Summer may have drawn to an unofficial close, but that clearly hasn’t stopped the Galaxy S II from wearing all white. Today, the albino version of Samsung’s Gingerbread handset officially made its way to Vodafone, just a few days after launching in the UK and more than a month after leaking in “official looking” images. The blanched, 4.3-inch smartphone is available for free with a two-year, £36 per month price plan (roughly equivalent to $58 per month), though it’s still unclear whether it’ll be making its way stateside anytime soon. If you’re looking to brighten up your pocket, you can grab your own at the source link below.

Mysterious Samsung Slider now going by ‘Stratosphere;’ Pantech Breakout also gets another look

Samsung Stratosphere

Astute Android Central readers will recall the phone you see above as the Samsung SCH-i405, which we first brought you a full picture of way back in July, looking very much like an LTE version of Sprint’s Epic 4G. And now it’s back in a clearer render form, pretty much looking how we last left it, only now going by its "Stratosphere" name.

Pantech BreakoutNo real change in specs, so far as we unofficially know. You’re likely still looking at a 4-inch(ish) slider with what our original tipster believed may be a Super AMOLED Plus screen (or maybe it’s just the shine of a qHD resolution), with about 2GB of storage, a 5MP camera on the back and 1.3MP shooter on the rear. Plus it’s got 4G LTE data. Huzzah.

Then there’s there’s the Pantech Breakout, seen here at right. That’s another one we broke the news on a week or so ago. It’s got a 4-inch display at the usual 480×800 res, with a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 390 MB of internal storage and an 8GB microSD card. It’s got a 5MP shooter on the back and a VGA camera up front. It’s also a 4G LTE device, serving as a mobile hotspot for up to 10 devices. It’s rocking a custom skin atop Android 2.3.

Still no official word on when either of these could be launched.
